review: mission tall ships part 3

"I loved mission tall ships, every part of it. Meeting people from Texas, who had given up their time and holidays to come over and help us (at their own expense), was very humbling and a great encouragement. They became family straight away and we worked well together.
One of the things that stood out for me was morning devotions together, which included worship, a word from the bible, and prayer. Everyone was so open and passionate about the Lord.

The whole event plus the weeks leading up to it had been soaked in prayer, God honoured that prayer and we had an amazing time. People were open to chatting and receiving leaflets, and many commented on the friendliness and the welcome they received. At the least it may make them think differently about the church. Those out and about got to speak to many people about Jesus and got some very good responses.

Tall Ships has gone now but our mission is still the same, to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with others. I think this is what God was teaching me, because it’s not something I do easily. That, and the importance and power of prayer.
It was very tiring but well worth it, it was a real blessing from beginning to end. Thankyou to the team that organised it, for their commitment, passion and enthusiasm, it was inspiring. "

review: mission tall ships part 2

"I loved mission Tall Ships. It was exhausting but worth it. It is the first time in a long time that I felt we as a church were really 'on mission' the mission that Jesus has called us to: going and making diciples and teaching them. I loved that prayer was the foundation of everything we did and there seemed to be a collective recognition that apart from God working through us we were unable to do anything of real value or have any kind of real impact. Our felt weakness was a theme of the week with God using the time to give many opportunities to step out in areas that would have previously terrified them! I spent Monday afternoon talking to complete strangers at the Tall Ships village, inviting them to Church and the African Children's Choir and having some great conversations, I was working alongside an amazing girl called Cathy, she seemed so confident and gifted and I felt encouraged to be bold and talk to people. The funniest thing was that when we both talked about it afterwards we had both percieved the same thing about one another but felt terrified and inadequate ourselves! I love that God can use weak people like us!"

"I am beginning to learn that it's not about me and what I can do, but about Him and what He does through me and often in spite of me! [During the tall ships mission] God showed me that if I listen to Him and obey His gentle nudges I get to share in what He's doing, which is so much better than me trying to be a "good witness"!

Church membership is practical commitment to a local church. This involves:

1 - Regular Attendance.

Hebrews 10:25. We meet not for our own benefit but for each others benefit

2 - Attitude toward others.

Forbearance Col 3:12-15: Making allowances for each others faults

Respect 1 Thess 5:12-13.

Submission Heb 13:17

3 - Use of gifts. Romans 12:4

4 - Free will offering 2 Cor 9:7-8.

Our giving will:

Reflect our gratitude for god's grace 2 Cor 8:8-9
Reflect our income 1 Cor 16:2. The fact that the first day of the week is mentioned shows that it is not just what was left over, this is pre meditated giving!
Reflect the operational needs of the fellowship 2 Cor 9:12, 1 Cor 9:13-14

Luke 16:1-13 the shrewd manager

People put a lot of effort into looking after themselves on this earth (which is temporary), shouldn't we show the same effort for looking after ourselves eternally? What kind of intentional investment are we making in our spiritual and eternal well being?
This involves:

Personal investment - bible study, prayeretc
Investment into fellowship with other believers
Investment of witness

The little things are the big deal. All of life is spiritually significant.

Psalm 103:8-13

⁸ The LORD is compassionate and gracious,
slow to anger, abounding in love.

⁹ He will not always accuse,
nor will he harbor his anger forever;

¹⁰ he does not treat us as our sins deserve
or repay us according to our iniquities.

¹¹ For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
so great is his love for those who fear him;

¹² as far as the east is from the west,
so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

¹³ As a father has compassion on his children,
so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him;

We might say we forgive but not really mean it. When God says it, he means it.

With god, forgiveness is forgetfulness. Isaiah 43:25 "I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions, for my own sake, and remembers your sins no more."

Forgiveness is giving up the right of retaliation. Forgiving is giving up, releasing another.God releases us from the deserved judgement for our sin. Ephesians 1:7 "In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace"

If we really understood this, other people would notice our joy. A heart liberated by forgiveness is like a magnet. A reason that a church isn't growing may well be because those who profess to know God's forgiveness really don't.

Genuine discipleship

Luke 10:38-42 Mary & Martha

Mary is presented as a model of genuine discipleship. The phrase "she sat at the lords feet" (v39) indicates discipleship.

She makes Jesus the priority by:

Resisting distractions - She prioritises Jesus over lesser things. We live in a time when have more distractions available than ever before. Are we prioritising Jesus?
Resolving to listen - She wants to hear what Jesus has to say. We have more access to the bible (God's word) than ever before. Are we wanting to hear what God has to say?
Resigning herself to his love - Love can't be forced. The loved return love. Our love comes from Him first loving us at the cross. True love doesn't count the cost

What is the church for?

The greek word used for church is Ekklesia - "called out ones". We are called out of the world and into Him (See Matt 11:28-30)
The call is not just a call to decision but to lifelong discipleship.

Jesus gives the great commision in Matt 28:19-20, telling the disciples to make disciples

¹⁹Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, ²⁰and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

The making of disciples involves 3 elements:

Acquiring disciples- "go and make". Bringing people in.
Equiping disciples - "baptising and teaching". Learning and growing as Christians.
Employing disciples - "obey everything I command". Serving others and using our gifts.

What would our church look like if this dynamic was it's heartbeat?

Wow. Prayer started at 6pm yesterday, I spent the hours between 2am and 7am in the prayer room, it felt like 10 minutes. There is nothing like time in Gods presence.

What is the 40 Days of Community?

In the Autumn of 2004, Headland Baptist Church (then Regent St Baptist Church!) took part in the 40 days of purpose. That campaign addressed our own relationship with Jesus and now the 40 Days of Community looks to build on that and look at how Jesus affects our relationship with others.
